PORT MONDRIAN is a photographic series that abstracts images of shipping containers by the mere addition of black sub-framing and white blocks of negative space. Putting boxes around boxes created patterns within patterns and drew attention to this aspect of the composition.
My original image captures were often calm and introspective. My goal in PORT MONDRIAN was to reframe the viewer’s point-of-view to show how the parts can be grouped in different and beautiful ways. Literally drawing attention to the boxes with prominent sub-framing and elements of negative space helped take them out of context and invoke a visual tension.
PORT MONDRIAN represents for me a search for a utopian state, a condition, in which patterns strive for a symmetrical perfection, where forms include decisive and crisp divisions, and the inherent beauty of the colors is revealed.
